Taxkorgan, stone fortress or stone tower in the Uygur language, is a well-known attraction in Xinjiang. Located in Tajik autonomous county in Taxkorgan, it is situated at an altitude of 3,090 meters on the borders of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and close to the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan. The place has a recorded history of more than 2,000 years. During the Han Dynasty, Taxkorgan was the main center of the Kingdom of Puli, as was mentioned in the Book of Han and the Book of the Later Han. Later it became known as Varshadeh. [Photo/IC]
