In May 2017, at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China would hold the ‘China International Import Expo’ (CIIE) starting from 2018.

It was a significant move for the Chinese government to hold CIIE and to give firm support to trade liberalization and economic globalization, actively opening the Chinese market to the world. It facilitates countries and regions all over the world to strengthen economic cooperation and trade, as well as to promote global trade and world economic growth in order to make the world economy more open.

The first CIIE was hosted on Nov 5, 2018, while the second edition opened on the same date in 2019.

The venue for CIIE, the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, is the world's largest single block building and exhibition complex, boasting a total construction area of nearly 1.5 million square meters. It covers a total area of 500,000 square meters, including 400,000 square meters in indoor exhibition halls and a 100,000 square meter outdoor area.

The 2019 edition was hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and organized by the China International Import Expo Bureau and National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. The event’s partners included the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the International Trade Center.

The value of deals reached for one-year purchases of goods and services at CIIE 2019 surpassed $70 billion, a sharp rise compared to the previous year’s edition. The number of visitors reached almost one million, while 181 countries, regions, and International organizations participated. Around 64 countries and international organizations had their own pavilions, including the WTO, UNDP, and the International Trade Center. More than 3,800 foreign companies exhibited and offered approximately 400 new products, technologies, or services. In addition to the general public, around half a million registered professionals visited the expo, of which almost 7,000 were overseas buyers.

In addition, around 400 professional activities, including seminars, talks, conferences, and press briefings, were conducted. Policy analysis by various ministries, reports by the WTO and UNDP, as well as research papers by academicians were presented.

Through the expo, China has created an opportunity to attract the best products, technologies, and services under one roof. Each participating company offered the ‘best of their best’ at a very competitive price, whilst also obtaining business with China.

The expo also set a healthy new trend for Chinese entrepreneurs to improve their quality and technology to compete in global markets. As a result of CIIE, new cycles of high-end products, technologies, and services may be initiated. Chinese entrepreneurs can set their goals even higher and work hard to meet international standards.
