Established in 1978, Qianling Museum features a vast collection that primarily comes from Qianling Mausoleum, the grand joint tomb of Emperor Gaozong (628-683) and his wife, Wu Zetian (624-705), the only female empress in Chinese history. The site also includes 17 smaller attendant tombs.
Located 76 kilometers from Xi'an, Qianling Mausoleum is recognized as one of the first national key cultural heritage sites, a National 5A Tourist Attraction, a National Archaeological Site Park, a National First-Class Museum, and a National Civilized Tourism Demonstration Site.
Built during the prosperous Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Qianling Mausoleum reflects the empire's peak wealth and power. The grand tomb complex, which followed the layout of Tang-era Chang'an, took 57 years to complete, making it one of the most magnificent imperial mausoleums in history.
Qianling Museum houses over 4,000 artifacts unearthed from five excavated attendant tombs, alongside 4,598 additional relics, including 27 first-grade cultural artifacts. The museum's rich collection offers visitors a deeper understanding of Tang Dynasty history, imperial culture, and burial traditions.
