Double Ninth Festival, observed on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, is not only a day to honor the elderly but also features the ritual of climbing mountains to take in the autumn views.

In this landscape painting by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) court painter Yuan Yao, the tranquil autumn scenery of pine-covered mountains is captured with delicate brushstrokes and a harmonious composition. The elderly figures, accompanied by young attendants, are vividly depicted, blending seamlessly into the natural landscape.

The painting wonderfully evokes the atmosphere of late autumn and the tradition of climbing high to admire the distant views during this special time of year. Collection: Shandong Museum.
