Xi'an joins IP demonstration city list

Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, was recently included on a list of demonstration cities for metropolises strong in intellectual property (IP), according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration.

The recognition is said to reflect the measures undertaken and achievements made by Xi'an in promoting the development of IP.

In 2021, the total number of patents granted in Xi'an was 64,131, a year-on-year increase of 41.2 percent. The three types of patent authorizations were: 14,055 invention authorizations, 46,123 utility model authorizations and 3,953 design authorizations – accounting for 22 percent, 72 percent and 6 percent of the city's total, respectively.

At present, the city has 51.5 invention patents per 10,000 residents, ranking it top among sub-provincial cities in the country.

By the end of 2021, the number of valid trademark registrations in the city was 379,496, a year-on-year increase of 23.5 percent, accounting for 61.1 percent of the province's total.

Xi'an currently has 10 urban geographical indication protection products, 13 agricultural geographical indication protection products and six geographical indication certification marks – and 15 enterprises in the city have been approved to use special geographical indication markings.

By the end of 2021, Xi'an had 12 national intangible cultural heritage projects, 101 provincial ones and 229 municipal ones.

In addition, eight copyright registration workstations have been established in the city, with a total of 23,008 works registered throughout last year, a year-on-year increase of 13.9 percent – accounting for 77.7 percent of the province's total.
