Yantai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong province, saw a boom in consumption during the five-day May Day holiday that ended on May 5, local authorities said.

The city's 21 scenic attractions received 1.31 million tourists and achieved an operating income of 126.56 million yuan ($19.59 million). The 64 commercial enterprises monitored by the city generated 343 million yuan in retail sales during the holiday, up 29.8 percent year-on-year.

Local authorities launched more than 300 cultural tourism activities to stimulate consumption, and 1 million yuan in consumption vouchers were issued to local residents. They can be used at bookstores, cinemas, and scenic spots.
