The IFAM2020 high-level forum on international development trends in new materials opened on Oct 31 in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, Northwest China, with the aim of focusing on the frontier of advanced materials research and promoting the exchange, cooperation and personnel training of new materials development in China.

More than 30 academicians and more than 400 well-known material scholars from home and abroad carried out discussions and exchanges in more than 20 new material fields, such as meta-materials, nano-materials and energy battery materials.

The forum also set up a new material industry exhibition to share the sector's development achievements.

The forum is a series of academic exchange conferences initiated by academician Zhou Lian in 2011, and this session was co-sponsored by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Material Engineering of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the China Materials Research Society, the Materials Academic Alliance, the National New Material Industry Development Strategy Advisory Committee, and the Xi'an Municipal People's Government, and it was hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University.

At the opening ceremony, Xie Hui, secretary of the Party committee of Beijing University of Technology, said that the purpose of this forum is to solve common problems, break through key difficulties, stimulate new ideas, explore new directions, and jointly overcome difficulties in promoting solutions to cutting-edge problems in science and technology.
