Nine 5G stations have started operating at main venues for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Zhangjiakou, North China’s Hebei province, according to information released by China Mobile Hebei Company on Aug 9.

A total of 110 stations, including 38 at Olympics venues and 72 along the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, will be able to provide comprehensive 5G services during the games.

The network will play a key role in high definition (HD) live broadcasts, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence monitoring during the games, according to Liu Kun, a project director from the Zhangjiakou branch of China Mobile.

A number of 5G-powered 360-degree cameras will also be installed at the venue, making the games feel more immersive to TV viewers.

In addition, some athletes will wear helmets with mini 8K ultra-high-definition cameras, which will provide the audience with a unique perspective on the games.

Self-driving buses and drones will also be connected to the 5G network to ensure the efficient transportation of personnel and goods.
