For thousands of years an annual ceremony paying homage to Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor, has been held in Northwest China's Shaanxi province before and after Qingming Festival.

The mausoleum, located in Huangling county, Yan'an, Shaanxi province, is the burial site of the Yellow Emperor, a legendary figure who lived nearly 5,000 years ago. He is widely regarded as the initiator of Chinese civilization and a common ancestor of the Chinese.

A wide range of serial events themed on the Yellow Emperor and ancient Chinese culture are staged in the province prior to and after the memorial ceremony. They include family history searches for overseas Chinese, folk art performances, photo, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, lectures, academic seminars, concerts and tree-planting activities, all of which are good ways to grasp the spirit and root of the Chinese people, connecting everyone to the past and binding them as a people.
