Hotpot Festival

Every two years, Chongqing will host a special cultural festival celebrating hotpot, one of China's favorite dishes.

Sponsored by the municipal government and the China Cuisine Association, the event showcases the best of Chongqing, not on stages, but on tables. Several exhibitors from South Korea, Japan, India, Thailand, and Singapore will come to promote their unique cooking style of hotpot.

The festival also features a collection of hotpot utensils and pictures detailing the history of the cuisine. Chongqing hotpot was invented by local boatmen and dock workers around the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Their simple cooking style contributed to the do-it-yourself character of eating hotpot.

Unlike the Beijing-style hotpot broth which is largely flavorless, the Chongqing-style broth is heavily flavored. The dish is made of meat, hot peppers, and ginger in a big pot of boiling oily soup, making it an ideal food to dispel the cold and damp weather conditions.

The Belt and Road International Skills Competition attracted about 700 professionals from 44 countries and regions to southwest China's Chongqing.

The competitors were from 80 member countries and regions from the WorldSkills international organization, as well as 35 Belt and Road countries that are not WorldSkills members.

Operating under the WorldSkills competition standard, participants competed in 18 skills, such as electronics, automobile technology, wood working, fashion technology, floristry, and hairdressing.

Exchange and exhibition activities for Chongqing's craftsmanship and inherited skills were also spotlighted.

The event was jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Development and Reform Commission, the China International Development Cooperation Agency, and the Chongqing Municipal People's Government.

WorldSkills was founded in 1946 and organizes world championships of vocational skills. It is held every two years in different parts of the world.

The championships provide a platform for communications and exchange in vocational skills, playing a positive role in promoting economic and social development in every participating country and region.
