The Zhuozhou Lantern Festival originated from the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220), and became popular in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and flourished in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911). It derived its original name (Tonghui Lantern Fair) from the Tonghui Drum Tower on Nanbei Street of Zhuozhou, and was recognized as one of the eight great scenic spots of Zhuozhou in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. Since 1986, Zhuozhou resumed the Tonghui Lantern Festival, and in 2000, it held the first China Zhuozhou Lantern Festival. Tonghui Lantern Fair was thus officially named the Zhuozhou Lantern Festival.

Zhuozhou Lantern Festival is held during the Lantern Festival every year. Decorated archway lanterns, group lanterns, and ushering lanterns are distributed in every street and alley of the city, making the city of Zhouzhou an ocean of lanterns. At night, the red lanterns are hung high in streets, with neon lights flickering, indulging a flood of people in the gorgeous and luxuriant scene in the brilliant colorful light. During the lantern festival, there are also folklore performances and firework shows. The tourists at the lantern festival have surpassed 150,000 person-times for years and years. Since 2002, the lantern festival has moved to its urban cultural square of the city, hence the scale becoming larger, and becoming a large-scale tourist cultural event.
