Australian students experience celadon culture in Shangyu

A group of 11 students from Australia experienced traditional Chinese celadon culture in Shangyu district of Shaoxing, Zhejiang province on April 8.

The students gathered with their Chinese peers at a local high school to learn how to make a celadon artwork, including how to shape, carve and polish them.

Celadon is a popular form of glazed porcelain made from violet-golden clay and a mixture of burnt feldspar, limestone, quartz, and plant ash. It has been widely used to make daily necessities such as bowls, salvers, cups, pots and bottles for thousands of years.

The district of Shangyu, home to nearly 400 kilns, is one of the birthplaces of Chinese porcelain, especially celadon.
