Chenzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone was built by the provincial government in April 2003 and was elevated to the national level upon approval from the State Council in February 2015. It also serves as the city's export processing zone.
Covering an area of 1,243 square kilometers, the development zone is home to a permanent population of 80,000, of which three fourths are blue-collar workers employed by some 470 enterprises.
In recent years, Chenzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone has forged four pillar industries: non-ferrous metal, electronic information, high-end equipment, and modern service. The zone has also rated as a provincial base for digital video, information, and new material industries. It ranks among Hunan province's top 10 industrial parks to invest in.
According to the zone's official statistics in 2016, the industrial output of enterprises above designated size, those with annual sales of more than 5 million yuan or $744,371, totaled 56 billion yuan. The tax revenue from its service sector recorded 233 million yuan, accounting for 42.32 percent of the zone's fiscal revenue. The number of tertiary industry workers was 26,000, making up 45 percent of the zone's total.
