Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School

Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School was founded in 1995. It is a private school built in Xi’an High-tech Industrial Development Zone to improve the investment environment. In 1998, the school was approved as a provincial key middle school, and in 2009, it was approved as a model high school in Shaanxi province.

There are two campuses in Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School: one is the high school and the other is the southern campus. Adhering to the school philosophy of “people-oriented, student-centered, world-oriented, and future-oriented, cultivating high-quality qualified personnel”, and the school motto of “innovation for the times, making the best of the talents”, the school established the first International Curriculum Class and Qian Xuesen Experimental Class in Shaanxi province, with fruitful results.

Two-thirds of the teachers have participated in international education and training many times. In recent years, the school has independently cultivated 70 famous teachers, subject leaders and teaching experts in Shaanxi province. It has established 21 famous teachers’ studios, subject leaders’ workshops and teaching experts’ workstations with 189 members, which has played a leading role in the construction of the teaching staff throughout the province.

The school has established sister-school relationships with nine schools in four countries, with more than 300 students studying abroad for half a year or engaging in short-term social practice. Brookland Middle School, and Segers Middle School set up a project team to carry out cooperative research on the cultivation of innovative talents through exchange of students. Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School also collaborates with the University of Kentucky to conduct research on students’ English reading and writing. In cooperation with MIT, graduate students come to proofread students’ innovative practice and experimental training every year.

The Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School International Class was approved by the Shaanxi Provincial Education Department in 2006, and registered by the Ministry of Education as an international high school curriculum class. Currently, nearly 500 students are enrolled in 18 classes in three grades, with the introduction of A-LEVEL and IGCSE curricula, as well as AP curricula. International classes are taught jointly by foreign teachers and Chinese teachers. Foreign teachers hold teacher qualification certificates in their disciplines, and 60 percent of them have more than 10 years of teaching experience in the United States and the United Kingdom curriculum system. The Chinese teachers are selected by merit, and have good bilingual teaching ability and many years of teaching experience in international courses. Over 70 percent of the teaching faculty consists of overseas students, doctoral students, and teachers with a master’s degree, and over 90 percent of teachers have participated in foreign courses (AP, A-LEVEL, SAT) and TOEFL and IELTS system training. The school also sets a teacher-student ratio of about 30 students per class.
