North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region borders Mongolia to the north. Ereenhot in the mid-north part of the region is only 9 kilometers form Zamen Ude, Mongolia. With such a location, the regional government in 2010 decided that a -border trade zone would established in Ereenhot in response to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
On Sept 3, 2016, Ereenhot cross-border trade zone was officially opened to provide convenient trading services to tourists and residents living in the border areas between China and Mongolia. It is the first zone of its kind in the region.
The zone covers about 100,000 square meters in the western part of Ereenhot Land Port, with total investment of 350 million yuan ($60 million). It is only a five-minutes drive from Ereenhot Railway Station and 25 minutes' drive form the airport.
