Tourism was booming during the New Year's Day holiday in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, with passenger flow and tourism revenues both seeing strong growth, according to official data.

A total of 493,400 tourists traveled around the city during the three-day holiday, generating 909 million yuan ($140.04 million) in revenues, according to Hohhot Tourism Administrative Commission.

The two figures represented annual increases of 12.57 percent and 22.51 percent respectively.

Hohhot's tourism market remained stable as rural tourism and ice and snow-related tourism, including winter sports and ice and snow festivals, proved popular with tourists.

The 2nd Ice and Snow Festival held at Nanhu Wetlands Park and the Fourth Hasuhai Ice and Snow Festival in Chilechuan grasslands tourist area attracted large crowds during the holiday.

Heavy traffic accompanied the high number of visitors, with around 66,651 passengers traveling by air, 29 percent higher than last year, according to Carnoc.com, China's leading civil aviation web portal.

The New Year's Day holiday is one of China's important public holidays.
