These seven Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) pottery figurines—all depicting Hu people with deep-set eyes and prominent noses—bring to life a moment of ancient acrobatics.
One figurine stands looking upwards with a pole rising from a round hole in his forehead. Along the pole, two children perform a breathtaking acrobatic stunt known as yuan tong (pole climbing). The other six figurines show varied expressions—some clapping in delight, others cheering.
Unearthed in Caofulou village, Datong, Shanxi province, this set now resides in the Shanxi Museum, reminding us of the excitement of a live performance that has transcended centuries.
