Founded in 1978, the Anqing Museum, together with the Anhui China Huangmei Opera Museum and the Exhibition Hall of Anqing Revolutionary Cultural Relics, are three brands under one institution.
Located at No 8 Qianjiang Lu, Jingkai district, Anqing, the museum undertakes the critical roles of collecting, preserving, showcasing, researching, and educating about cultural heritage. It is a national first-class museum and the only state-owned museum dedicated to Huangmei Opera in China which has been approved by the State Council.
The museum's collection boasts over 16,000 artifacts, including jade, ceramics, bronze wares, paintings, revolutionary relics, and historical materials on Huangmei Opera. Highlights include the Neolithic stone sculpture of a human face, the ancient sword of King of Yue Qibei, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) blue-and-white porcelain vases, iron cannons from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851-64), hand-copied Huangmei Opera scripts from the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and calligraphy works and paintings by renowned figures such as Deng Shiru, Zheng Shan, and Zheng Lin.
It hosts eight permanent exhibitions, including Anqing Coins Display, Anqing Ancient Civilization Display, City Memory of Anqing, and Huangmei Opera Art Exhibition. City Memory of Anqing displays cultural heritage with regional characteristics – such as time-honored shops and ancient buildings – by restoring old streets and alleys in the city. Huangmei Opera Art Exhibition, held by the Anhui China Huangmei Opera Museum, explores the development of Huangmei Opera in Anqing.
The museum employs a variety of methods to bring history and culture to life, such as charts, sand tables, live performances, and digital tour guides. It also hosts drama performances and offers workshops on pyrography and Chinese paper-cutting etc, creating a vibrant space for cultural education and engagement.
