Fujian puppetry, a distinguished form of Chinese puppet performing arts, primarily features string and hand puppetry.

Originating in the 10th century, this cultural practice has flourished in the cities of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, as well as in the surrounding regions. It is distinguished by its refined performance techniques, a diverse repertoire of traditional plays and music, and the intricate artistry demonstrated in its puppet designs.

Despite its cultural significance, Fujian puppetry has faced challenges since the 1980s, as socioeconomic changes and the demanding nature of the art have led to a decline in young practitioners.

In response to this decline, communities, groups, and representative bearers initiated the 2008-2020 Strategy for Training Coming Generations of Fujian Puppetry Practitioners. This program aims to safeguard and sustain Fujian puppetry through comprehensive professional training, fostering a new generation of puppeteers.

Key components of the strategy include developing teaching materials, establishing performance venues, training institutes, and exhibition halls, and promoting awareness through formal and informal education. The program also emphasizes regional and international cooperation and artistic exchange.

The initiative has engaged many participants, including practitioners, local communities, and educational institutions. As a result, 200 potential practitioners have received professional training, 20 public puppetry groups have been established, and financial support has been provided to key cultural bearers.

Recognizing its effective safeguarding practices, the program was selected in 2012 for inclusion in the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
