Railways rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co achieved a milestone on Nov 28 with the rollout of the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport monorail transit system at its production plant in Southwest China's Chongqing.

The project is said to mark the world's first custom-designed straddle-type monorail solution for an airport transit system, setting a new standard in urban mobility.

The rail vehicles, independently developed by CRRC Changchun, showcase cutting-edge features in intelligent operations, tailored passenger services and eco-friendly designs.

Equipped with a GOA4-level autonomous driving system, independent power units and ethernet-based controls, the manufacturer says the system ensures seamless coordination between flights, terminals and trains, adapting flexibly to passenger flows.

Designed with travelers primarily in mind, the carriages feature spacious interiors, wider doors and dedicated luggage storage – ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience. Innovations such as smart windows, intelligent air conditioning and real-time passenger counting further enhance user comfort.

The monorail vehicles utilize supercapacitors for energy storage – eliminating traditional power rails, reducing energy loss and achieving a 10% improvement in energy efficiency. Lightweight materials and advanced motor technology are said to contribute to a more sustainable transit solution.

The manufacturer says the groundbreaking system not only enhances connectivity at Chongqing Jiangbei Airport but also reaffirms CRRC Changchun's leadership in pioneering intelligent and green rail solutions globally.
