The 2024 China's Intangible Cultural Heritage Wheaten Food Carnival kicked off on Aug 23 in Taiyuan, North China's Shanxi province. This vibrant event showcased the rich history and diverse techniques of Chinese flour-based cuisine with various engaging activities.

Through captivating performances and exhibitions, the event highlighted the artistry and ingenuity of Chinese flour food traditions. The Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Flour Food Skills Show featured skilled chefs and industrial representatives demonstrating their mastery of dough manipulation, including tossing knife-cut noodles, threading ancient copper coins with dough, and cutting noodles with two knives.

Visitors were also invited to participate in hands-on activities, such as learning to knead dough for fish-shaped noodles and roll dumpling wrappers. Over 20 international students from Shanxi Medical University enthusiastically tried their hand at making mooncakes, rolling glutinous rice balls, and crafting noodle balloons, experiencing all the allure of Chinese traditional culture.

At the food tasting area, visitors could savor over 25 different types of intangible cultural heritage flour-based foods from various regions, including Zhoucun flatbread, rolled glutinous soybean flour cake, and Shibajie fried dough twists. Over 40 local specialties, such as Qingxu rice cakes and Dingxiang steamed pork with flour, were also available.
