A landmark event took place at Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin province, when it hosted the 20th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar, or GPR on June 23-27.

The preeminent event – held biennially since 1986 – is the foremost international conference in the field of GPR, previously hosted in countries like Australia, Belgium and the US.

GPR is a geophysical method that uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to detect subsurface characteristics – renowned for its precision and non-destructive capabilities.

It is utilized in geotechnical engineering, construction inspections, archaeology, minerals exploration, disaster surveys, planetary exploration and in military target detection.

Jilin University's GPR team, supported by national projects, is known to have made significant advancements in GPR theory and technology – including the development of MIMO GPR technology and high-precision subsurface imaging algorithms.

Their research is widely viewed as having applications in urban road safety, minerals exploration, soil testing, landmine detection, cultural heritage preservation and planetary exploration.

The conference attracted the participation of 64 international representatives from 21 countries – including the US, Canada and Japan – totaling over 300 scientists and engineers.

It featured 159 presentations and two short courses on GPR numerical simulation and data analysis, taught by top scientists from the UK and Canada.

The hosting of the conference is expected to advance global GPR technology and its applications, bolster urban safety in Jilin and boost Jilin University's influence in the international GPR community.
