3. Releasing river lanterns
Releasing river lanterns during Qixi Festival is another traditional custom. It originates from the myth of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl. On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, according to the legend, the Cowherd and Weaver Girl meet on the Magpie Bridge. People were concerned about the darkness of the night, so they placed lanterns in the river, allowing the lanterns to float downstream and illuminate the Magpie Bridge.
