Shanghai has been ranked first in terms of nighttime economy among 337 cities in China, financial media outlet Yicai announced on June 28 at the 24-Hour City of Vibrance Forum held at the Museum of Art Pudong.

The ranking was based on six aspects of the nighttime economy – night travel, bars, live houses, movies, lighting and public transportation.

Statistics show that the average daily number of night travelers in Shanghai exceeded 1.77 million last year. The city had more than 2,300 bars and 140 live houses, and screened about 135,700 movies after 9 pm.

Moreover, Shanghai's nighttime lighting intensity, the number of active subway stations and bus lines at night were the highest in China.

Since the launch of the Shanghai Night Festival – a major event that is part of the May 5 Shopping Festival – on June 6, the city's nighttime traffic has increased by 23.1 percent compared to the same period last year. As of June 25, Shanghai's nighttime consumption in June reached 42.75 billion yuan ($5.91 billion).

The forum also witnessed the launch of the first Shanghai Nightlife CEO Council, which consists of nearly 30 representative enterprises from various industries such as business, culture, tourism and sports.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, the council can help Shanghai become a global 24-hour vibrant model city with high-quality and sustainable development.
