As an artery connecting northern and southern China, it has long contributed to the nation's prosperity. The canal includes a total of ten river reaches — Tongjiqu river, Weihe river, the Huaiyang segment, Jiangnan segment, East segment of Zhejiang province, Tonghui river, the North segment, the South segment, Huitong river segment and the Middle river segment.
The canal had close connections to economic development, cultural exchange and regime stability in ancient China.
It was added to the list on June 22, 2014.
