An amalgamation of the Tianjin Museum of Art and the Tianjin History Museum, the Tianjin Museum was formally established in 2004. The museum’s new location at the Tianjin Culture Center opened in 2012, with five floors above ground and one below. The museum now has a modern architectural external appearance and houses an eclectic collection of traditional Chinese art.

The Tianjin Museum is a comprehensive art museum with nearly 200,000 items in its permanent collection, including art and historical materials, ancient bronze wares, potteries, calligraphy, paintings, jade wares, royal seals, traditional Chinese stationery, oracle bones, coins, seals, and folk art.

It accommodates three permanent exhibition halls, the Rare Treasures (exhibiting ancient bronze wares, jades, calligraphies, paintings, porcelain, arts and crafts, and articles of this kind), the Ancient Tianjin (exhibiting Tianjin’s history from the Old Stone Age to the semi-late Qing Dynasty), and the Modern Tianjin (showing Tianjin’s development in the last 100 years from the Opium Wars to the founding of the People’s Republic of China). There are also eight relic-themed exhibition halls displaying calligraphies, paintings, jade, the Chinese blessing culture, Chinese stationery, and folk arts and crafts.
