China's late premier Zhou Enlai (1898-1976) and his wife Deng Yingchao (1904-1992) were great proletarian revolutionists, unwavering Marxists, and extraordinary leaders of the country and the Communist Party of China. The couple spent their youth and fell in love in Tianjin. Always considering Tianjin their second hometown, they expressed their will to have their ashes scattered in the local Haihe River.
The memorial museum was established to commemorate the achievement of the couple, on the basis of an earlier memorial solely dedicated to Premier Zhou. The new memorial was opened to the public on Feb 28, 1998.
It has a rich collection of rare and valuable cultural relics which are exhibited in three main areas - the Permanent Exhibition Hall, the Special Exhibition Hall where a reproduction of the West Flower Hall (Xihua ting), the residence and office of the couple in Zhongnanhai (the central headquarters for the Communist Party of China and the State Council of China) of Beijing is constructed, and the display area of the special plane for the late premier.
The Permanent Exhibition Hall houses the exhibitions People's Premier Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao, the Pioneer of Chinese Women’s Movement in the 20th Century, respectively introducing the live stories of the two great figures. The reproduction of the West Flower Hall is an independent compound constructed strictly after the design of the original in Zhongnanhai. It consists of two courtyard enclosures to show the living and working environment of Zhou and Deng. The interior furnishings are faithfully restored to the originals of the 1960s. At the same time, it accommodates the thematic exhibition, The Great Mind. The open air area displays the aircraft exclusively used by Premier Zhou from 1957 to the mid 1960s. The No. 678, IL-14 airplane was a gift from the Soviet Union government in August 1957. Premier Zhou used it to travel to both domestic cities and neighboring countries including Vietnam and North Korea. It is now a second class national historical relic.
The memorial, through well-organized and vivid exhibitions, illustrates the glorious lives of the two great figures, Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao, highlighting their outstanding personalities and noble minds and their life-long devotion to serving the people and the country.
