You shouldn't neglect one of the most significant battles in China's War of Liberation (1946-49), and should set your sights on visiting its memorial in Tianjin.
The Pingjin Campaign Memorial is a history museum that through the media of film, photography, and painting celebrates the Communists' victory over the Kuomintang in January 1949 in what was called the Pinjin (Beiping-Tianjin) Campaign. The clash was one of four major battles fought between the two sides and involved over one million soldiers.
The main exhibition space of the memorial hall is a three-storey building with a height of 22 meters. The upper part of the facade of the huge archway-styled exhibition hall bears the Chinese name of the memorial in seven large characters "平津战役纪念馆" inscribed by Chinese Marshal Nie Rongzhen (1899-1992).
The total length of the exhibition line in the main exhibition hall is 740 meters, and the content is divided into six themed sections: prologue hall, campaign decisions, campaign implementation, people’s support, great victory, and heroic achievements.
More than 400 historical photos, 2,000-plus cultural relics, and auxiliary exhibits such as multimedia, an electric sand table, restoration of old sites, landscapes, sculptures, and paintings are also exhibited.
Building of the memorial was started in 1995, and the facility was opened to the public in 1997. It was assessed as a national AAAA Tourist Attraction and ranked among national first-class museums in December 2020.
