Shanghai advances wildlife protection regulations

The newly revisedWild Animal Protection Law will officially come into effect on May 1.

The Shanghai Municipal Administration of Landscaping and City Appearance is also accelerating the legislative process of theShanghai Wildlife Protection Regulations.

As the ecological environment has improved, wild animals are gradually increasing. At present, Shanghai is home to 150 species of national key protected wildlife, 325 species of terrestrial wildlife with important ecological, scientific, and social value, and 46 species of local key protected wildlife.

In recent years, Shanghai has actively explored the protection mode of wildlife habitats that is suitable for the development of megacities and selected a number of areas with good ecological bases and a relatively concentrated distribution of wildlife to carry out habitat construction and restoration. In addition, four nature reserves and 22 municipal wildlife habitats have good ecological and social benefits.

"The newly formulatedShanghai Wildlife Protection Regulations are expected to reflect Shanghai's characteristics of establishing a municipal wildlife habitat protection system, improving the scientific protection and management system for wildlife, encouraging public participation, and strengthening collaborative protection in the Yangtze River Delta region," said Deng Jianping, head of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Landscaping and City Appearance.
