From ancient times, the Ningxia region has been a confluence of cultures, a place where many different ethnicities and peoples came together. At the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Museum, which covers an area of 30,258 square meters and includes a vast array of exhibits, people can learn about the development of Ningxia.

The basic exhibition focuses on the customs of the local Hui people. It showcases Hui religion, architecture, handicrafts, clothing, eating customs, ceremonies, and wedding and funeral customs. Three special exhibitions, the Ningxia Historical Artifacts Exhibition, the Western Xia History Exhibition, and the Exhibition of Stone Rubbings from the Helan Mountains, are also available at the museum. Ningxia historical artifacts mainly involve the interaction of people from border regions and people of the central plains. The Western Xia History Exhibition portrays the historical development of the Western Xia Kingdom (1038-1227) using excavated Western Xia artifacts combined with historical documents. The Helan Mountains exhibition contains a large number of ancient petroglyphs. Rubbings from these, together with color photographs of the designs, show the early presence of northern-steppe nomadic people's customs.

The pictures and textual descriptions inside the museum also show how the Red Army of China fought against fascist Japan during World War II and finally led Ningxia to liberation.
