The consumption sector in Shanghai in East China experienced a strong rebound during the recently completed Spring Festival holiday, data from the city's consumption market big data lab showed.

Total on-site consumer spending – including retail, catering and restaurants and accommodation – on Jan 20-26 reached 32.3 billion yuan ($4.76 billion). This recovered to 81.7 percent that of the same period in last year's lunar calendar.

During the holiday, Shanghai's major business districts, commercial streets and shopping malls launched loads of Chinese New Year-themed marketing activities.

Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street's visitor flow increased by 18.3 percent compared with last year's Spring Festival.

Elsewhere, Yuyuan Garden's visitor flow increased by 27.7 percent thanks to its annual lantern show – which this year was inspired by Shan Hai Jing, a major source of Chinese mythology that dates back more than 2,000 years.
