How did women in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) dress? A painted wooden figure with silk garments vividly depicts a female dancer.
As the only Tang Dynasty figure wearing clothes found so far, it is carved out of wood, has paper arms and silk clothes. Its painted face also presents the make-up from more than 1,000 years ago. The impact of Central Plain culture can also be seen by the figure’s exquisite design.
Excavated from the Astana Tombs in Turpan, Xinjiang, in 1973, the wooden figure is in the permanent collection of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum.
