Haikou, Hainan province, began to implement citywide temporary static management from 6 am to 7 pm on Monday, in a move to curb the new COVID-19 outbreak, which has spread across the island since Aug 1, according to the local epidemic prevention and control headquarters.

It said all public transportation services have been suspended, while social services, epidemic prevention services and emergency services remain in place.

Similar practices have also been imposed in other cities and counties across the island, including Danzhou, Lingshui, Wanning and Dongfang.

With the first confirmed case of COVID-19 detected in Sanya on Aug 1, the current outbreak has spilled into 13 cities and counties across Hainan. It said Sanya, at the southern tip of the island, reported a total of 801 confirmed locally transmitted cases and 409 asymptomatic carriers from Monday to Sunday.
