Supported by central authorities and cultural departments, it is one of the key projects to support the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP), according to local authorities at the opening ceremony.

Covering an area of 90,000 square meters, the exchange is located in the resort city's central business district, providing services like art auctions, exhibitions, bonded warehousing, trading, and institutional activities. It aims to apply international standards to the exhibition, exchange, and auction of artworks and tradable cultural relics, while providing an open, professional, and efficient platform.

In April, the National Development and Reform Commission, as well as the Ministry of Commerce released a master plan that set out a series of measures supporting the construction of the Hainan International Cultural Heritage and Art Exchange in the Hainan FTP.

Local officials stated that they will make Sanya a gathering place for international cultural heritage and art transactions, with a high-quality business environment and supporting services. They said that they will also bolster the development of the cultural heritage, as well as art exhibition and auction industry in Hainan.
