Xuanhua Milk Grape
The milk grape belongs to an oriental species of Vitis Feval. An ancient species of high-quality grapes, it is mainly planted in Turpan of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Xuanhua and Huailai in Zhangjiakou of North China's Hebei province.
Xuanhua accounts for over 85 percent of the total plantation area of this special grape species in China.
Xuanhua has a long history in planting the milk grape, which is reputed for its high quality and has been listed as a famous fresh fruit in northern China. Its juice will not flow out when the grape is cut with a knife.
Under the recommendation of the Chinese government, Xuanhua’s local traditional vineyards were formally added to the list of Globally Important Agriculture Heritage Systems by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at a conference held in Japan in May 2013.
Chaigoubu Bacon
Chaigoubu bacon is a time-honored smoked meat in Huai'an county. The specialty was invented by Guo Xi, a royal cook of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). According to the annals of Huai'an, the special meat made by Guo was very fresh and tender and enjoyed great popularity among people in Zhangjiakou and other neighboring regions.
The pork-made specialty has bright color and tender taste. There are many varieties of bacon in Chaigoubu. At present, there are smoked pork (spiced pork, pig head, pork ribs, etc), smoked mutton, smoked chicken, and smoked rabbit meat. Especially those intestines with a peculiar smell have been smoked into fine delicacies with good color, taste and quality.
The specialty has become a popular food in the region to the west of Beijing. Nowadays, local people often send it to their friends as a special gift.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are an organic and nutritious specialty grown on the grasslands of northern Zhangjiakou. They are rich in mineral elements such as potassium and calcium, together with vitamins B and C. Wild mushrooms must be preserved and stored in a cold environment after being manually collected and dried to keep their original flavor intact.
The specialty today is known at home and abroad.
Naked Oats
Naked oats are a main crop grown on the four counties of the Bashang Grassland. They have won the nickname of the Pearls in the Region to the North of the Great Wall because of their wide utility and high nutrition.
Compared with other crops, naked oats contain a high level of protein, fat, vitamins, calcium and other minerals. Meanwhile, thanks to their low concentration of sugar they have become an irreplaceable food for people with diabetes.
