Springs

Zhangjiakou is home to a number of cold and hot springs such as Huangdi Cold Spring, Chiyou Cold Spring, Xihaiziyan Cold Spring, the Tangquan and Tangzi Temple hot springs of Chicheng, Sanmafang Hot Spring of Yangquan and Houhaoyao Hot Spring of Huailai. In addition, the city also boasts the Black Dragon Pond of Chicheng and a wetland in the downstream area of the Hulu River.

Scenery related to weather and climate

The eastern summit of Little Mount Wutai, which is the highest place in Hebei province, has become a popular site to appreciate sunrises and sunsets. Misty weather often takes place in the area of Honghualiang in Chongli. The Bashang Plateau and basin areas of Yuxian and Zhuolu are highly recommended areas for escaping summer heat and enjoying beautiful scenery.

Recreational centers and other scenic sites

There are 26 recreational destinations featuring healthcare, physical fitness, leisure and sightseeing, 15 well-preserved sites for religious belief and ancestral worship, and a garden in Zhangjiakou. Meanwhile, the city has built 16 major construction projects and production bases, one military-oriented scenic site, four worship venues, five facilities for physical fitness and dancing, six Buddhist pagodas and similar buildings, and seven pavilions.

Furthermore, visitors will also find grottoes, remains of the Great Wall and former military strongholds, stone steles, traditional Chinese architecture, former mansions of famous people, academies and royal tombs and reservoirs, some of which are listed as key cultural relics under national-level and provincial-level protection.

Historical ruins

Yangyuan county is home to Niwanhe Ruins, Xiaochangliang Ruins, Hutouliang Ruins and Niquanbao Ruins. The legendary Zhuolu Battle, which saw the defeat of Chiyou by Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor, the legendary first ancestor of the Chinese nation, and the Battle of Tumu Fortress, which led to the capture of Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) by the Oirat tribes of Mongols in 1449, took place in Zhangjiakou. There are military ruins of the ancient Yehuling Battlefield, Chiyou Fortress and Bajiao Stronghold in the city.

Moreover, visitors can still find the ruins of Jimingyi, a post station with a history of 700 years, and the ancient trade road the Haalgan-Khuree Route, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and at that time linked Zhangjiakou with Khuree (now Ulan Bator) of Mongolia, Huangdi Town, former capital of Dai state during the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC) and the central capital of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

Mountainous and waterfront scenery

There are a number of breathtaking mountains, valleys and other landforms in Zhangjiakou. Its famous mountains include Little Mount Wutai, the Peak of the Great Wall, Mount Dongling, Mount Jiming, Mount Tianhuang and Mount Taiping. Feihu Valley, Anjia Valley and Shuiquan Valley are also popular tourist destinations in Zhangjiakou. Other scenic spots include Shirenbei Geopark, Jin River, Yongding Valley, and fossil sites.
