The event will run until Oct. 17, with online and offline activities being held across the country.

First launched in 2014, the weeklong campaign led by China's Cyberspace Administration, the country's top internet regulator, is an annual event that promotes national awareness of cybersecurity and helps people protect themselves by understanding more about online security risks.

Zhuang Rongwen, head of China's Cyberspace Administration, and Liu Guozhong, secretary of the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee, gave keynote speeches at the opening ceremony.

Zhuang said that cyberspace departments nationwide should provide residents with more cybersecurity education and technical skills, strengthen protection of personal information and further purify the online environment.

In his speech, Liu said that Shaanxi will continue to improve its comprehensive cyber governance capabilities, strengthen the protection of key data resources, critical information infrastructure, and personal information, crack down on cybercrimes in accordance with the law, and cultivate new technologies and applications such as artificial intelligence and the internet of things.

This year, a series of the event's key activities, including a cybersecurity expo and a technology forum, is being held in Xi'an. Participants of the opening ceremony also visited the cybersecurity expo that opened on Oct 8.
