Beihai in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region will become a global production base for smart televisions, high-end glass and photovoltaic materials as well as high-quality paper in the next five years, officials from Beihai announced on Aug 29.

Industry is the main engine for Beihai's economic growth and the city is striving to become one of the cities in China with the highest development speed and the highest development quality in the next five years.

The city now has initially formed six industrial clusters for sectors including the green chemical industry, electronic information, high-end glass and photovoltaic materials, high-end paper making, new materials, and energy.

Beihai will also move forward the development of the local marine economy, the new economy and the cultural tourism industry to become a modern international coastal tourism city and a regional global consumption center.

The city has maintained sound development momentum from 2016 to 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, ranking in the frontier among all China's 14 coastal open cities. Its industrial investment increased by 76.5 percent year on year in the first half of 2021.
