The annual passenger throughput of Sanya Phoenix International Airport exceeded 10 million on July 5, Chinanews.com reported on Tuesday.

This is the 11th consecutive year for Sanya airport's passenger throughput to surpass 10 million, 87 days earlier than 2020.

The recovery of Sanya's air travel market has been going smoothly, and the monthly passenger throughput from March to June of this year increased 2.7, 16.7, 26.1 and 4.9 percent, respectively, compared with pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

During the golden week for Spring Festival, the passenger throughput of the only airport in Sanya hit 338,000 trips and the number was 63,000 during peak days.

China's domestic tourism market recovered strongly during the May Day holiday, with passenger throughput reaching 69,000 trips on May 1, breaking single-day passenger flow records for the May Day holiday in previous years.

On the same day, the ratio of wide-body aircraft reached 33.24 percent, setting a new single-day record since the Sanya airport started operations in 1994.

Sanya airport's current daily passenger throughput is 52,000 on average, up 54.5 percent year-on-year.

China's civil aviation sector continued steady operations in May, with airports in China handling 396,500 outbound flights, up 62.34 percent compared with the same period last year, according to a report released by VariFlight, a China-based civil aviation data service provider.
