Pingxiang Museum showcases the cultural and natural heritage, as well as the history, of Pingxiang, a city in western Jiangxi province and a crucial member of the city groups on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Of the 4,500-plus pieces in its permanent collection, natural specimens takes up more than 10 percent, and include 248 fossilized dinosaur eggs dating to the late Cretaceous Period and a giant lingzhi fungus that has been defined as "rarely seen in the world and the largest one in Asia".

Pingxiang is one of China's most significant places for dinosaur egg fossil deposits, and has an abundant supply. The 248 dinosaur eggs were discovered between 2002 and 2014 from beds dating to the Cretaceous Period in the local Pingxiang area. In 2008, dinosaur bone fossils were excavated at the same geographical area and from the same geologic horizon.
