The history of the Ganzhou Museum can be traced back to 1960. Today it is a cultural facility amalgamating the previous Ganzhou Museum, the Ganzhou Municipal Cultural Heritage Administration, the Hakka Museum of Ganzhou, and the Ganzhou Natural History Museum. It holds some 20,000 historical artifacts and natural specimens, among which ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, and items of the Hakka folk customs are the most characteristic.

Ganzhou was the first stop of the Hakka (literally, "guest families") people during their historical southward migration from northern provinces, and became of their major settlements across China. It is home to over 600 walled villages, which, like tulou, are dwelling structures unique to the Hakka people. Therefore, the Ganzhou Museum features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the culture of this population.

Other permanent exhibitions are themed around the ceramic art originating from the Qili county of Ganzhou and the general history of Ganzhou. There is a paleontological gallery and an in-door botanical garden for natural history lovers.
