First designed in 1964, Guilin Museum opened to the public in 1988, marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The famous litterateur and historian Guo Moruo (1892-1978) inscribed the plaque for the museum. It moved to its new site in 2016, and four years later was ranked as a national first-class museum.

Covering a total construction area of 34,000 square meters, the museum possesses the largest exhibition space and the fullest range of functions of any museum in Guangxi, allowing it to comprehensively illustrate the history and culture of Guilin. It is home to more than 30,000 cultural relics - including locally-unearthed plum vases from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), gifts from foreign guests, paintings and calligraphy treasures from the 14th to 20th centuries, historical relics of Guilin and Guangxi minorities - which are showcased in four permanent and two themed exhibitions. Meanwhile, an educational and interactive center has been specially created for children and young people.

Receiving more than one million visits per year, Guilin Museum has become an important window for cultural exchanges and a spiritual home for local people.
