Foshan National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone was among the first national-level hi-tech industrial development zones approved by the State Council in 1992. As the main part of the Pearl River Delta National Independently Innovative Demonstration Zone and the Guangdong-Guangxi-Guizhou High-speed Railway Economic Belt Cooperative Pilot Zone (Guangdong Park), it is a major powerhouse of science and technology innovation and industrial upgrading in Foshan City. It is also a national characteristic innovative park, a national intellectual property pilot park, a provincial comprehensive pilot zone for the integration of finance, technology, and industry, and an innovation base for the equipment manufacturing industry on the west bank of the Pearl River. Constructed by the district government, it now has five sub-parks (Chancheng Park, Nanhai Park, Shunde Park, Gaoming Park and Sanshui Park covering a total of 470.72 square kilometers) which implement overall planning, resources sharing, and innovative services.

In 2019, it achieved a regional GDP of 164.9 billion yuan, total industrial output of 409.8 billion yuan, and operating income of 445.1 billion yuan. According to the latest report the Torch High Technology Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the zone ranks 25th in the country.
