The number of new personal consumers of new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in South China's island province of Hainan surged by 180 percent year on year to over 9,300 in the first 10 months of 2020, local-authority figures show.

As of the end of October, Hainan had some 45,000 NEVs, accounting for 3.1 percent of the total number of cars in the province, according to the provincial department of industry and information technology. The proportion was nearly twice the national average.

Hainan has been promoting the use of clean energy vehicles and aims to completely phase out the sales of conventional fuel-based vehicles by 2030.

The province currently has 775 charging stations and 18,000 charging piles, including 8,790 public ones, facilitating the convenient use of electric cars across the island.

According to the department, Hainan will introduce more high-end operation and service providers through its zero-tariff policies to further promote green mobility and fulfill its target of clean energy use in vehicles.
