An aerospace remote sensing image and BeiDou navigation service project started construction in Liangjiang New Area, Southwest China's Chongqing municipality on April 3, with a total investment of 200 million yuan ($28.32 million).

The project will provide data and technology support for Chongqing's ecology environment, environmental protection, and water conservancy industry when finished.

It will also upgrade the BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System based on the current satellite navigation and positioning reference service system. The BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System will be constructed this year and is superior to the BeiDou-2 system in satellite performance, signal accuracy, and number of satellites.

The project is expected to boost the improvement of remote sensing equipment, processing technology, and the BeiDou system with its demands in high precision positioning services, such as remote sensing image data sources.

With the construction of the project, the BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System will cover a wider range with higher accuracy, providing high precision location service for territorial planning, natural resource management, disaster monitoring, emergency rescue, as well as autopilot and unmanned aerial vehicle flight.

In addition, the project will improve Chongqing's capacity in satellite navigation, boost the application of the intelligent internet of things, and promote Chongqing's economic development.
