Southwest China's Guizhou province, the country's first big data comprehensive pilot area, plans to increase its number of 5G base stations to 10,000 by the end of the year.

According to Shang Kaiying, head of the provincial communications administration, the urban areas of all cities in Guizhou will be covered by the 5G network by the year-end.

Shang said a total of 1,467 5G base stations had entered operation by the end of last year, and the number of 5G users in the province stood at nearly 260,000 by January.

Telecom operators have launched 5G innovation labs, 5G big data research centers in Guizhou, realizing multiple scenarios including intelligent public transportation, telemedicine and ultra-high definition livestreaming.

Shang said the application of 5G technology will be expanded to cover major roads, industrial parks, tourist attractions and factories.
