The CAFA Art Museum is a modern, international art museum that conducts academic research, presents exhibitions, restores artworks, and provides art education.

The institution, once called the Central Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, used to be located at Wangfujing in downtown Beijing. Designed by the prominent architect Zhang Kaiji, the former gallery was the first specialized art museum constructed after the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

In 1998, the gallery was renamed the CAFA Art Museum. In October 2008, the current building, designed by the prominent Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, was opened in the new CAFA campus in Beijing’s Chaoyang district.

Occupying an area of 14,777 square meters, the museum has a total of 4,150 sq m of gallery space on six floors, four of which are above ground. The underground two levels are used as office space, collection storage, and a conservation lab.

The first floor houses a cafeteria, multi-purpose conference room and auditorium arranged in an open space, while the second floor features permanent exhibitions of ancient Chinese paintings, calligraphy, artworks donated by senior CAFA professors, and those created by contemporary faculty members. Fully artificial illumination on this floor prevents potential damage to the artworks caused by the UV rays in daylight. The third and fourth floors combine to create a space for exhibits of various sizes.

By the end of 2017, the museum had collected 18,050 objects covering a wide range of media and art forms including oil paintings, prints, calligraphy, lianhuanhua (palm-sized illustrated book with sequential drawings), illustrations, sculptures, traditional Chinese paintings, drawings, sketches, watercolor pastel, photography, and installations.
