The Majestic Theatre was built in 1941, designed by the famous architect Robert Fan (1893-1979). The name "majestic" (mei qi) in Chinese language means "fabulous and flawless".

Upon its completion, the theatre was praised by people at home and abroad as “the first in Asia” and “the most advanced art theater in the Far East”. It was also the firstround cinema to show western films at that time. Many classic works have been presented on the stage of the Majestic Theatre.

After five years of repairs, the theater reopened in 2016. As the main performance venue for national and international cultural and artistic exchange, the theater mainly stages dramas and musicals supplemented by large-scale operas, ballets, concerts, dances, opera performances and dramas, as well as film screenings.

The auditorium has two floors and a total of 1,261 seats, 756 on the first floor and 505 on the second floor. The unique geometric design of the ceiling greatly improves the efficiency of the lighting.

The audio equipment on both sides of the stage adopts Art Deco's design philosophy, which takes the same dark brown color as the stage. There are four large screens on both sides and the stage images can be displayed in real time through the screens when needed.
