Xinjiang's first ecological and environmental protection regulation on development zones went into effect on Nov 1, playing an important role in protecting ecology in industrial regions.

The Ecological Environmental Protection Regulations on the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone of Changji Hui autonomous prefecture strictly stipulate ecological environmental protection standards for local companies and enterprises in waste gas and sewage discharge, solid waste treatment and noise control.

Ren Jianpin, director of the administrative committee of the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone, said the regulations have great significance in protecting local ecology and environment and ensuring the development of natural resources, ecological governance, improvement of people's livelihood and achieving economically sustainable development.

As a large-scale coal, electricity and coal chemical industrial base of China, Zhundong Development Zone is playing a big part in promoting the economic and social development of Changji in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, where economic growth still lags behind the coastal provinces and municipalities, Ren said.

The regulations were passed by the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's People's Congress in September.
