According to the aviation hub strategic plan released by Southwest China's Chongqing municipal government and the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Chongqing has set a goal of becoming an international aviation hub by 2035.

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport's passenger throughput reached 41.6 million people and the cargo throughput exceeded 380,000 tons in 2018, ranking 9th and 10th respectively in China.

Currently, Chongqing's domestic airlines cover 142 cities, along with 82 international airlines covering 61 cities. Chongqing aims to achieve an annual passenger throughput of 75 million people by 2025, including 10 million people from international airlines that will cover 80 cities.

By 2035, Chongqing's new airport will be completed and put into operation, which will form a downtown airport system with an annual passenger throughput of 120 million people, including 24 million people from international airlines.

By then, Chongqing's international airlines are expected to cover over 100 cities, connecting all the countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
